Remote Education Provision 2020-2021

This information is intended to provide clarity and transparency to pupils and parents or carers about what to expect from remote education where national or local restrictions require entire cohorts (or bubbles) to remain at home.

The remote curriculum: what is taught to pupils at home

SCENARIO 1: An individual child is self-isolating at home but the rest of the class is at school.

Where individual pupils need to self-isolate but the majority of their peer group remains in school, how remote education is provided will likely differ from the approach for whole groups. This is due to the challenges of teaching pupils both at home and in school.

  • Please log into Google classroom Find the home learning pack – this provides 14 days of work.
  • As the rest of the class remains in school, the class teacher will not be uploading any additional work other than that in the home learning pack, to Google classroom.
  • Please contact your child’s class teacher in the first instance if you accessing the home learning pack in Google classroom.
  • You will be able to contact your class teacher by email (class email address)

SCENARIO 2 Whole class/school is sent home to self-isolate

  • Please log in to Google classroom (see instructions at the end of this letter)
  • Find Home Learning Pack Term 2 (see instructions)
  • Work through the home learning pack for 2 days
  • On day 3 at the latest your class teacher/s will begin uploading daily work and resources to your Google Classroom to support learning at home. These will be found in Classwork.
  • Please contact your child’s class teacher in the first instance if you have any issues regarding Google Classroom.
  • You will be able to contact your class teacher by email (class email address) or through Google Classroom.

Following the first few days of remote education, will my child be taught broadly the same curriculum as they would if they were in school?

  • We teach the same curriculum remotely as we do in school wherever possible and appropriate. However, we have needed to make some adaptations in some subjects. For example, PE may be delivered through a specialist not affiliated with our school – e.g. Oak National Academy

Remote teaching and study time each day

How long can I expect work set by the school to take my child each day?

We expect that remote education (including remote teaching and independent work) will take pupils broadly the following number of hours each day:

Accessing remote education

How will my child access any online remote education you are providing?

We use Google Classroom as our primary method for delivering remote education.

All children have their own individual logins for this platform.

If my child does not have digital or online access at home, how will you support them to access remote education?

We recognise that some pupils may not have suitable online access at home. We take the following approaches to support those pupils to access remote education:

  • We have used the DFE funding and some school funds to purchase a number of Chromebooks. Parents are eligible to apply for these in the case of isolation and they will be allocated according to priority. Factors that will be taken into account when making the decisions include, but are not limited to:
    • Child(ren) are eligible for free school meals
    • There are a number of pupils from the school in the same family
    • Knowledge from the class teachers based on the previous lockdown that a family struggled to access home learning e.g. because the only way to access home learning was via a mobile phone.
    • Any other reasons that parents may want to put forward
  • If a family are experiencing difficulties accessing home learning they will reach out for support from the school and printed material may be provided on a case-by-case basis if the situation cannot be resolved.
  • We have IT technician available, trained in Google Classroom, to support the delivery of this platform to our school community.

How will my child be taught remotely?

We use a combination of the following approaches to teach pupils remotely:

  • Recorded teaching, (e.g., video/audio recordings made by teachers, Oak National Academy lessons, BBC) PowerPoint/PDF teaching resources and follow up work to be submitted via Google Classroom wherever possible. Teachers will feedback to pupils via Google Classroom in Private Comments on their work. Some feedback will be given ‘live’ and some will be given at a later time.
  • Live Google Meet wellbeing sessions with class teacher/s and small groups of children
  • printed paper packs produced by teachers (e.g. workbooks, worksheets) if necessary
  • textbooks and reading books pupils have at home

Engagement and feedback

What are your expectations for my child’s engagement and the support that we as parents and carers should provide at home?

  • We would expect all children to access remote education wherever possible. How much they are able to complete may depend on individual circumstances. Class teachers will be in contact to support families where it is felt this is needed.
  • Where possible we would like children to work independently, although this will be largely dependent on the age of your child.
  • Work can be completed at any time during the week – there is not a set time that work should be handed in
  • We expect all children to attend their weekly Live Google Meet wellbeing session with their peers and class teachers.

How will you check whether my child is engaging with their work and how will I be informed if there are concerns?

  • Teachers will check and monitor pupil engagement with remote learning via Google Classroom. Where children are not accessing the learning resources, class teachers will contact families directly by telephone/email to provide support as needed.

How will you assess my child’s work and progress?

Feedback can take many forms and may not always mean extensive written comments for individual children. For example, whole-class feedback or quizzes marked automatically via digital platforms are also valid and effective methods, amongst many others. Our approach to feeding back on pupil work is as follows:

  • All work submitted will be reviewed by the class teacher and, where appropriate, individual feedback will be given via private comments on work. When the work is returned to children they are able to see these comments.
  • Live feedback and editing may be provided where appropriate via Google Classroom
  • Whole-class feedback or quizzes marked automatically via digital platforms (e.g. Oak National Academy) are also valid and effective methods of providing feedback to pupils.

Additional support for pupils with particular needs

How will you work with me to help my child who needs additional support from adults at home to access remote education?

We recognise that some pupils, for example some pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), may not be able to access remote education without support from adults at home. We acknowledge the difficulties this may place on families, and we will work with parents and carers to support those pupils in the following ways:

  • Pupils will be provided with differentiated work where appropriate
  • Children with an EHCP or those identified as vulnerable may be offered a place in school to support their development.
  • The class teacher, SENCO and/or Pastoral lead will contact the family on a regular basis to provide support where needed. Records of this contact are kept in school
  • For some children with SEND written, paper based resources may be useful but this will be judged on an individual basis in liaison with the class teacher and SENCO
